A former East Aurora School District #131 teacher has been found guilty for failing to report suspected child abuse to authorities as required by law.
A Kane County jury on Tuesday found 43-year-old Elizabeth Aguilar of Marion Ave., guilty of Failure to Report Child Abuse as a Mandated Reporter. The offense is a Class A misdemeanor.
The East Aurora School District dismissed Aguilar in September.
Kane County prosecutors argued that on March 7, 2018, Aguilar, a teacher at Bardwell Elementary School in Aurora, having reasonable cause to believe that a child known to her in her professional capacity was an abused child, failed to make a report of the suspected abuse to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
Educators are designated by Illinois’ Abused and Neglected Child Reporting Act to be a mandated reporter of abuse and neglect of children and are required to immediately report suspected abuse and neglect to Illinois DCFS.
WSPY reported that 62 year-old Juan Avendano of South Glen Circle in Aurora was charged with Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child, five counts of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse, and Indecent Solicitation of a Child.
Between April 2014 and March 2018 Avendano, a Kindergarten teacher at the school, allegedly made sexual contact with two victims who both are younger than 13 years old.
Aguilar will be back in court on November 13th at 1:30 p.m. She faces a sentence of up to 364 days in jail.
There was not a previous booking photo in the initial arrest.
