Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed a new law this week he says will better protect immigrant tenants.
Advocates say the law aims to make sure immigrants are safe from harassment by their landlords.
Landlords also cannot threaten to disclose a tenant’s immigration status.
Under the new law, landlords are prohibited from evicting or retaliating against a tenant based on their citizenship or immigration status. Landlords are also prohibited from intimidating tenants by disclosing or threatening to disclose a tenant’s citizenship or immigration status to any person, entity or immigration or law enforcement agency.
Violators may face civil penalties.
Illinois is the second state in the country to pass such a law.
