Hillside Democrat Emanuel "Chris" Welch has taken the oath to become the next Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives. He replaces longtime Speaker Mike Madigan who failed to muster the votes to keep the job over-the-weekend.

In a statement, Madigan says it's time for new leadership in the Illinois Democratic Caucus. Madigan says that the state is in good hands.

Welch becomes Illinois first Black Speaker of the House, ending Madigan's nearly forty year tenure.

Madigan had been implicated, but not charged in an alleged bribery scandal involving ComEd. Welch had been the chairperson of the committee tasked with investigating Madigan's alleged involvement, but ended it without taking any action.
