Most hang up their roller skates as a young adult, but not Roger Waumpach of Kaneville.

At age 75, he continues to circle the floor.  Four times a week, 25 hours a week.

So, why you ask?

After a 49 year absence, Roger has returned to the roller rink.

Roger talks about his comeback.

A few months ago, Roger, wearing his black tuxedo, skated to five fifth place finishes at the National Championships in Nebraska. His best was third place in Gold Three Team Dancing with his partner Penny Marchiel of Aurora, his former dance student, who also returned after 40 years from skating. Three years ago, Roger won a gold and silver medal at nationals.

He describes the judging, which uses a point scale zero to 100.

Besides the Pasa Doble dance, he skates to others.

Roger practices and also coaches skaters at the Aurora Skate Center just east of Montgomery. Back in the day, he could be found lacing up the skates at the Fairway Roller Rink in Sandwich or a rink in DeKalb.

Spinning wheels, organ music, colorful lights - A real Saturday Night Fever!
