The largest flour mill built from the ground up in North America officially opened in Mendota in LaSalle County on Wednesday.
The opening comes on the heels of Mendota's longtime Del Monte facility recently being announced for closure.
Archer Daniels Midland company opened the mill which has a 30,000 sq. ft. warehouse, a loop track with 110-car shuttle rail unloading capacity, three milling units, three bulk truck load-outs and rail load-out capability, a high speed packer, a lab, and an onsite transportation company.
The facility is on N. 43rd Rd.
Officials say the flour mill can produce about 30,000 cwts or close to 3 million pounds of flour per day. Around 30 to 40 people will be employed at the mill.
A ribbon cutting was held on Wednesday. Production at the mill actually began on September 1st. ADM built the mill in Mendota to coincide with a grain transfer facility already in town.
