Several area Republican lawmakers were appointed or were re-appointed recently to leadership positions in the Illinois House and Senate.
Oswego State Rep. Keith Wheeler was named Assistant House Republican Leader on Wednesday. The position advocates for caucus positions on legislative issues and builds coalitions in support of legislation pending on the House Floor.
Plainfield State Rep. Mark Batinick was named House Republican Floor Leader. The Plainfield Republican will be the minority caucus’ point person during the daily floor debates and discussions.
Over in the Senate, Morris State Sen. Sue Rezin was re-appointed as Assistant Republican Leader, a position she has held since 2015.
She spoke about the re-appointment.
Sugar Grove Sen. Jim Oberweis was also re-appointed as Senate Republican Whip.
Meanwhile, Democratic State Rep. Linda Chapa La Via of Aurora was elected as Asst. Majority Leader in the House.
Another House Democrat is making history as the first openly gay House Majority Leader. State Rep. Greg Harris of Chicago replaces Barbara Flynn Currie of Chicago who became the state’s first female majority leader in 1997.
