Our sister station WCSJ reports that one person was killed and five others were injured in a multiple-vehicle crash that occurred on Interstate 55 in the northbound lanes in Will County around 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.

The Wilmington Fire Protection District said it was determined there were three semi tractor trailers and two passenger vehicles involved in the crash near Wilmington. One of the semis and both passenger vehicles sustained heavy damage.

The Illinois State Police said a semi driven by 46 year-old Shabbir Patel of Brampton, Ontario allegedly failed to yield to traffic that was stopped for construction, which then caused a chain reaction crash with four other vehicles.  Patel was taken to an area hospital.

Twenty-year-old Jessica Kirkland, of Godley, who was the second vehicle in the chain reaction was airlifted from the scene to an area hospital. The driver of unit three, 34 year-old Kenneth Bloor, of St. Peters, Missouri, was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Three others were injured in the incident.

Patel was cited for Following Too Closely & Failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. No other details have been released.
