UPDATE, 1:00 p.m.:

A Mendota man was arrested Thursday morning in relation to a string of recent smash and grab burglaries that have been reported in recent days.

According to the Mendota Police Department, 54-year-old Craig Hynes of Mendota is charged with two counts of Burglary pending a mental health evaluation to take place later this week.

Police officials received a report at around 9:37 a.m. of a smash and grab burglary in the 700 blk. of Main St.

Witnesses reported to police that Hynes was in the area and was allegedly seen carrying two pieces of memorabilia from the affected business.

Officers located Hynes a block away with the merchandise in hand, after which he was arrested.

Officials say it was learned that Hynes allegedly committed a burglary to a business at around 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, where he had thrown two rocks through the front windows and committed a theft of clothing.

Hynes has allegedly been responsible for numerous smash and grab burglaries as well as extensive criminal damage to businesses in the 800 blk. of Washington St., 700 blk. of Washington St., 700 blk. of Main St., 700 blk. of Illinois Ave. and the 600 blk. of 6th Ave.

Officials say Hynes has been a subject of interest in dozens of thefts throughout the Mendota area.

Hynes has previously been detained by Mendota Police on multiple occasions for other offenses including aggravated assaults and indecent exposures.


Mendota Police say a person of interest has been identified, following seven criminal damage and burglary complaints in recent days.

Police responded on Wednesday to the 800 block of Washington St. for a business with damage to their front window.

Upon arrival, officers found the front window had been broken and during investigation, they also found that another window had been broken in the 700 block of Main St.

The two incidents succeed five other complaints of the same nature.

Again, police say a person of interest has been identified and the investigation is ongoing.
