A Sugar Grove man turned himself in on Wednesday morning on a warrant for charges in connection with a hit-and-run accident which injured multiple people near Sugar Grove on Jul. 27.

According to the Sugar Grove Police Department, 30-year-old John Karas of Fay's Ln. is charged with Failure to Report an Accident with Injuries, Criminal Damage to Government Property, two counts of Criminal Damage to Property and two counts of Aggravated Assault.

Officials say Karas was additionally cited for Failure to Yield at an Intersection, Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle, Driving too Fast for Conditions and Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.

Officers were originally called to the area of Dugan Rd. and Granart Rd. at around 6:19 a.m. on Jul. 27 following reports of an accident.

It was found that Karas allegedly failed to maneuver through the roundabout with due care and drove up and over the center landscaped area of the structure.

A worker was in the roundabout at the time performing landscaping duties.

The worker's utility vehicle was destroyed and the worker was subsequently transported to an area hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Karas' vehicle continued up and over the roundabout where two bicyclists were riding.

One bicyclist was hit with debris from the scene.

Witnesses on the scene reported that the vehicle was airborne and traveled up and over the landscape worker.

Karas' vehicle continued in the opposite lanes of traffic and landed in a ditch.

Officials say Karas fled from the scene on foot following the accident.
