14th District Congresswoman Lauren Underwood was joined by Massachusetts Congressman Joe Kennedy III in Yorkville on Wednesday.
The two hosted a mental health forum at the Kendall County Health Department. The forum, which included a discussion with young adults as well as mental health professionals, provided an opportunity for community members to share personal stories and experiences with mental health and discuss ways Congress can work to improve access to mental health care and support systems.
The forum focused on mental health issues faced by Generation Z and Millennials. In the United States, suicide remains a leading cause of death among young Americans and research indicates the number is growing each year.
Congressmen both issued remarks indicated a mental health crisis is getting worse each year and that access to mental health services is dependent on factors such as the stigma surrounding mental health, available providers and affordability.
Underwood and Kennedy are both members of the U.S. House' Future Forum Caucus. The goal of the Caucus is to initiate civic-engagement with younger generations through thoughtful discussions to learn about the unique opportunities and challenges they face.
