A 17 year-old Joliet teen is dead and a 15 year-old male juvenile is being charged for his murder in Joliet.
Joliet Police say in a statement that the alleged homicide occurred in the 600 block of Chase Ave. on Sunday.
Officers were able to locate the 17 year-old inside a vehicle near Elwood Ave. and Creed St. who had been shot. The juvenile was first transported to Silver Cross Hospital then air lifted to Loyola Medical Center where he later succumbed to his injuries.
According to the Cook County Medical Examiner, 17 year-old Alejandro Mendoza of Foxborough Way is the deceased.
During the initial course of the investigation, officers located a residence that had also been struck by gunfire and officers were allegedly able to locate a loaded firearm when they took custody of the 15 year-old male suspect.
The 15 year-old was later arrested and had been charged with Aggravated Battery of a Firearm, Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Defacing ID Marks of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and No FOID.
The Will County State's Attorney's Office says the 15 year-old has now been charged with First-Degree Murder and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
Police say they are currently looking for assistance from the public. If any residence or business has surveillance videos of any suspicious activity between the hours of 5:30am and 6:30am on Sunday, they are encouraged to contact Detective Michael Cagle at 815-724-3035 or the Investigation Unit at 815-724-3020. The area of focus is from the area east of Collins Street to the rail yard and between Williamson Avenue and Jackson Street.
