Carolene Bell of Montgomery, IL, formally of Ottawa and Sandwich, IL passed away on Tuesday, August 20 at the age of 83. She was born September 11, 1935, the daughter of William A. and Eulalia R. Baird in Pana, IL. She moved to Sandwich, IL in 1941. She leaves behind three daughters, Dinah (Stephen) Meyers, Sandy (Denny) Matile, Shelly (Don) Zachary; one son, Gary (Michele) Bell; 11 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and two sister-in-laws Jane Underwood and Dorothy Dewitt.
She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother Helen Baird and stepfather Lester Rogers and her husband of 65 years, Roy W. Bell, Jr.
Carolene spent most of her life as a homemaker, but did work off and on at CTS Knights in Sandwich. She had a beautiful voice and loved to sing and whistle. She spent many years in the Federated Church (Sandwich) and Grace Baptist Church (Ottawa) choirs and sang at many family weddings. Carolene and Roy’s greatest joy was spending time with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They also enjoyed camping, motorcycle riding, square dancing and spent many winters in Florida during their retirement.
After having cancer surgery in February 2018, Carolene fought a hard and long battle and proved to all of us just how strong a woman she was.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 22 from 4-8 pm at Beverage Family Funeral Home, 104 Terry Street, Sandwich, IL. Funeral services will be at 10 am on Friday, August 23 at the Funeral Home followed by graveside service at Oakridge Cemetery in Sandwich.
