The Marmion Cadets finished 3rd at the IHSA Duals in Class 3A downstate in wrestling. The Cadets are annually one of the strongest programs no matter what Class they are in. The last few years they have been in Class 3A. Marmion defeated Mt. Prospect 43-21 in the quarterfinals, lost to Oak Park-River Forest 32-27 in the semi’s and bounced back to beat a very good DeKalb squad 32-27 to finish 3rd.
Against Prospect Marmion had wins at 106 from Diego Sotelo, 113 from David Jaffee at 113, Nathan Callaway at 132, Ryan Fleck at 145, Trevor Chumbley at 152, Brad Gross at 160 and Patrick Daum at 170. Sotelo, Callaway, Fleck and Chumbley would also get wins in the semi and 3rd place matches.
In the tough loss to OP-RF in the semi-finals Sotelo won in a Fall at 106 at 3:21, Callaway won a tough 3-2 Decision at 132, Fleck had a close 6-4 win at 145 and Chumbley won by Fall at 1:47 in 152lbs. Gross and Daum also won at 160 and 170.
Several Cadet’s won against DeKalb in the 3rd place match. The two really big wins came from two Cadet wrestlers that had not won earlier in the day as Michael Jaffe had a big TF win 21-6 at 120 pounds and Walter Green at won in a Fall in 2:24 at126 pounds. Those two wins helped out immensely as the Cadets brought home the 3rd Place State Trophy.
