The Newark Lady Norsemen are once again State Champions in Class 1A as they won the IHSA Tournament at Illinois State University for the second consecutive year. Newark has been in the Final Four for three straight years.
This powerhouse program just continues to get stronger and stronger led by a talented group veterans in 2019 again were just about unbeatable. Their final record on the season was 41-2. Seniors Meggie Scott, Mattie Chapman and Naomi Sweeney and the rest of the returning players from the 2018 State Champs had one goal above all others, WIN AGAIN!!
Madi Malone and Megan Williams were key contributors this year and last year as well, but they were just a part of this talented group in 2019. Others like Taylor Christian, Morgan Long, Kaitlyn Hatteberg, Kjersten Friestad and Lexi Long helped this years team reach their ultimate goal. You cannot talk about this group without mentioning how important players like Kenna Borton, Lex Lohrey, Cassidy Adams, Bella Marmo and Miraya Smith.
Head Coach Tonya Grayson reached a career milestone with her 500th varsity head coach win in the Sectional Semi-Final at Willow Academy. Immediately after that huge win, Coach Grayson let her team know “504” was the milestone that she and her team needed to concentrate one. One match at a time and “504” would mean a “State Title” victory. That is exactly what they did, CONGRATULATIONS to this great team!!! On and off the court these are a group of WINNERS!!
