The Sandwich Lady Indians Girls Basketball team did not end their season with a win on their final night of play and that was news!! The Lady Indians had done nothing but win since the season started as they went 32-0 until this night. Rock Falls would end the Lady Indians season with a 50-28 victory at the Rochelle Class 3A Sectional. One loss, just one loss after all those record setting wins, but that does it in high school basketball unless you take third place or the championship at Red Bird Arena you are going to end the season with a loss.
Rock Falls and their Lady Rockets did what Sandwich had done to everyone all season long, they played tough, tenacious defense stifling the Lady Indians offensive attack all night long. Both teams had turnover trouble as Rock Falls had 27 and Sandwich 24 in the game. On offense though Rock Falls found some holes in the Sandwich defense and shot the ball pretty well from the field and the free throw line.
Josie Ness led the way on offense for Sandwich with 9 points and Sarah Ness had 6. The Ness girls led Sandwich in rebounding each with 6 boards. Three seniors played their finals games for the Lady Indians as Sarah Ness, Cheyann Mitchell and Brookelyn Johnson will graduate this spring. Everyone else is scheduled to be back for the 2019-20 season and the Lady Indians will be strong again. What a run they had this year for sure.
The Lady Indians did not win a state championship, but these girls are truly CHAMPIONS!!! Tim Humes Breakout Tourney champs, Ottawa Marquette girls holiday tournament title, I-8 Conference Tournament title, I-8 Conference title and the Kaneland 3A regional tournament champs!!! Yes that would be a formula to be CHAMPIONS!!! Head Coach Chris Johnson said “I cannot thank my girls enough for how much they have given me this season. You have given this old man more that I have given you. You are my greatest team and I can’t wait to brag you up for the rest of my life.”
Well this “Old Broadcaster” will join coach in that vain and want to think this team for letting me be a small part of their season. It was so much fun to cover such an outstanding team and a super bunch of young ladies who have represented our community, their school, families and the I-8 Conference in the highest degree possible. THANK YOU!!!! I will be writing more about this team in the days ahead that is for sure.
