[Rock Island, Ill.] Bryson Schmidt, a three-sport standout from Plano High School in Plano, Illinois, has announced that he’ll be continuing his education and athletic career at Augustana. He plans on enrolling this fall and joining Coach Steve Bell’s Viking football program, as well as the Augustana baseball program, led by Coach Greg Wallace.
Schmidt, a 6’ 2”, 160-pound quarterback, was a three-year varsity letter winner for Coach Brad Kunz’s Reapers. As a senior, he earned Interstate 8 all-conference honors after completing 64 of 131 passes for 666 yards and eight touchdowns and rushing for 501 yards and a team-leading 12 touchdowns on 131 carries. The Kendall County Record named him to its all-area team.
A right-handed pitcher and third baseman, Schmidt is in line to earn his fourth varsity baseball letter for Coach John Parpet’s Plano club this spring. He was an All-Interstate 8 selection as a junior and enters his senior season with 10 career wins. He was a Perfect Game all-tournament selection in 2017.
The son of Jim and Shelley Schmidt of Plano, Illinois, Bryson lettered twice in basketball and was a three-sport academic all-conference honoree for the Reapers.
Schmidt joins a Viking football program with an outstanding tradition that includes four NCAA Division III national championships, 21 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin titles, 23 CCIW Players of the Year and 33 Academic All-America selections. Bell, who has compiled a 124-72 record in 19 years as a collegiate head coach, will be in his fifth season at Augustana in 2019.
Wallace’s baseball program has posted at least 25 wins in 19 of the last 20 years—including 10 seasons of 30 wins or better—and made NCAA Division III Tournament appearances in 1999, 2007, 2008, 2013 and 2016. Currently in his 22nd season as head coach at his alma mater, Wallace has a record of 609-287 (.680).
