Down below the ice at Foli Park in Plano, the fish are lurking. Some lunkers will be fooled by fake lures or live cold worms and pulled through a hole to daylight.
Saturday marks the eighth annual Plano Ice Fishing Derby, led by Plano Mayor Bob Hausler, a champion walleye caster. Men will grab their wife or girlfriend, dads will haul the kids outside, and the testosterone level and fish lies will reach record highs for the groups of buddies. Here is a sampling of interviews from a previous derby.
There will be a limited supply of loaner poles, and tent shanties, even free wax worms donated by Plano Rural King. Entrants over age 18 are encouraged to purchase a $10 raffle ticket that gives the winner a Frabill Shelter, and other prizes donated by Plano Molding. A fishing license is recommended and holes will be drilled for anyone. The fun event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Foli Park off Hale Street in Plano.
Here is Mayor Hausler’s fishing tip.
A frozen cold party will feature boasting and bragging rights this Saturday. And what happens in the shanty, stays in the shanty.
