The Illinois Department of Public Health will begin following new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Guidance that recommends a third dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for certain groups.

People who are recommended to receive a booster include those 65 years and older and residents of long term care facilities. Also recommended are people aged 50-64 years old who have underlying medical conditions. Both groups should get the booster at least six months after their Pfizer primary series.

The CDC also says that people ages 18-49 with underlying conditions may receive a booster based on their individual benefits and risks. People age 18-64 at an increased risk because of their job or institutional setting may also receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
