39-year-old Brad M. Johnson, of Machesney Park, is charged with three counts of aggravated battery and unlawful possession of contraband in a jail after he allegedly attacked a nurse at the LaSalle County Jail and two corrections deputies with what police are calling a metal shank.
The LaSalle County Sheriff's Office says Johnson attacked a nurse with the sharpened piece of a leg brace stabilizer bar and pushed her up against a wall and threatened her. Deputies were able to get control of Johnson, but were injured by the improvised weapon. Two deputies were cut in the neck area and have received medical treatment. The nurse wasn't hurt.
Sheriff Tom Templeton says the quick response by the deputies saved possible injuries to medical staff and prevented a possible hostage and escape situation. He says the correction staff is to be commended for doing a great job under hazardous conditions.
Johnson was being held in the LaSalle County Jail for an alleged fleeing and eluding incident earlier this month. The sheriff's office says more charges could be coming in connection to the attack on the nurse and corrections deputies.
