Fire Prevention Week wraps up Saturday, but that doesn't mean that people should stop being careful with fire. Newark Fire Protection District Board Trustee David Earl says people can enjoy fires in fireplaces or campfires with a little bit of caution.
For outdoor burning Earl says knowing the wind conditions is important.
In addition to having an extinguishing method handy, Earl says to make sure the fire is kept away from anything else that can burn, like a home, shed, or garage.
Earl also says it's a good idea to have your home's chimney cleaned if you have a fireplace or wood burning stove.
Earl also says to make sure that you have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in the home and to have an escape plan in case of a fire.
The Newark Fire Protection District on Saturday is having an open house from three to seven to promote fire safety. There will be demonstrations, free food, and raffles to support the fire protection district. The event will be at the fire station located at 101 E. Main Street.
