The Newark Community High School Drama Club is set to perform the show "A Monster Calls" Friday and Saturday at six at Newark High School.

Admission to the show is free, but the drama club will be accepting donations to benefit Ronald McDonald House.

Director, and English teacher, Elizabeth Wheeler says Newark High School is one of the first to do the stage adaptation of the novel-turned film about dealing with loss and grief.

Wheeler says the show is recommended for audiences age twelve and older.

Willow, who is a freshman at Newark, is playing the monster.

Ava, a sophomore, is playing the role of Conor. She says learning stage combat required for the show has been a challenge.

Sophomore Madison is playing the role of Conor's mother, or "mum" in the show.

Wheeler says the show is timely because people are experiencing many forms of loss right now and that the show is a good reminder that you're not alone. A student had brought the novel, which the film and stage adaptation are based on, to Wheeler's attention.

About 25 students are involved in the show, both on the cast and in the crew.
