The Illinois State Police are investigating a crash on Interstate 80 that claimed the life of a Plainfield man on Friday afternoon.
At approximately 3:40 p.m., a white Volvo truck tractor semi-trailer combination driven by Kenneth R. Kresen of Chicago allegedly failed to reduce speed on Interstate 80 as traffic slowed near Ridge Road and crashed into a vehicle being driven by Byong Park of Canada.
A vehicle driven by 61-year-old Gregory Hartwig, of Plainfield, then crashed into Kresen's truck and a fourth vehicle driven by Alejandro Garcia of Morris veered to avoid the accident and crashed into the concrete barrier.
Hartwig was extricated from the vehicle and pronounced dead at an area hospital. Kresen was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Park and Garcia were uninjured.
Kresen was later issued citations for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident and following too closely. Traffic resumed by 7 p.m.
