The Plano Police Department is starting a program to help officers respond to situations involving those with special needs.

Lt. Norm Allison says communication is a critical component to effectively handling emergency calls. To that end, the Plano Police Department is inviting those with special needs, or families who have members with special needs, to fill out an information form that can help police and other first responders in case of an emergency.

Allison says the goal is to help police respond with compassion and understanding when they are called.

Allison says more and more police officers are being trained in handling various mental health crises.

The form can be found online, printed out, and dropped off at the police department. Participation in the program is totally optional.
