A large contingent of citizens turned out Monday night for the Sandwich City Council Committee of the Whole meeting as aldermen and the mayor heard public comment on the council allowing cannabis sales next year in Sandwich.

Recreational marijuana becomes legal in Illinois on January 1, 2020.

Elsie Morrissey worked for 20 years at the Sheridan Correctional Center, which is totally devoted to substance abuse treatment.

Martha McAdams spoke in favor of the City of Sandwich allowing cannabis sales.

Alderman Les Redden had reservations about allowing cannabis sales in Sandwich.

City Attorney Jessica Harrill told the council she would like the decision on selling recreational cannabis in Sandwich completed by Thanksgiving.
