Grundy County Coroner John Callahan along with Illinois State Police are investigating a traffic crash that occurred on Interstate 80 near Morris around 8:00 p.m. on Friday.

Preliminary investigation indicates there were four vehicles involved. Two vehicles were westbound when one was passing the other.

In the process the vehicles came in contact with each other sending both units into the median and then continued into the eastbound lanes.  This is when both units struck two vehicles eastbound lane head on.

Due to the damage of the vehicle, Smith was pinned in the vehicle as it caught fire. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before midnight. His passenger was ejected from the vehicle.

The crash remains under investigation by Callahan’s office and the Illinois State Police.  Morris Fire and EMS along with several other EMS units assisted at the scene.
