A jury trial date has been set in the case of 38-year-old Donald Fredres, of Sandwich, who is accused of murdering his former in-laws back in March. Fredres appeared in LaSalle County Court on Thursday where a judge set his trial date on January 10 with a final pretrial hearing on January 7. The case can still be pushed back if lawyers are still working things out.
Earlier this month, a judge ruled that Fredres is fit to stand trial. Lawyers in June expressed concerns about his mental fitness and had ordered an evaluation.
Fredres is accused of shooting and killing Brenda and Gregory Barnes, who were both 62, at their rural Sheridan home. Fredres is also accused of shooting at the home of his ex-wife who was living in Sheridan. Fredres was arrested after a tense overnight manhunt in Sheridan near the Sheridan Correctional Center. He's being held in the LaSalle County Jail.
Prosecutors say that Fredres has confessed to the murders. He is being represented by the LaSalle County Public Defender's Office.
