Legislation passed as part of the so-called Build Back Better Act aims to help new moms.

Congresswoman Lauren Underwood says her Black Maternal Health Mominibus Act seeks to grow and diversify the perinatal workforce including midwives and doulas, invests in community-based organizations working to promote material health equity, and to expand maternal mental health care.

A news release from Underwood's office says that maternal mortality rates for black and Native American mothers are 2-4 times higher than for white Americans. Underwood's office also says that Hispanic and Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders also experience higher rates of maternal mortality.

The Build Back Better Act also includes expansions of postpartum Medicaid and CHIP throughout pregnancy and the yearlong postpartum period.
