The Yorkville City Council on Tuesday voted to begin seeking proposals from companies to build a solar array somewhere in town to cut back on the city's electricity costs. Chris Childress is with Progressive Business Solutions, the city's electric aggregation broker. He says this is the first step in getting a solar array for the city.

Childress says Illinois could be approving new money to help cities add solar power. Several other local government bodies including Kendall County and the City of Plano have installed solar energy arrays recently.

Some aldermen did express concern that a solar array might make it harder to sell a property.

The request for proposals can be done without any direct cost to the city. City documents say that Progressive will do the legwork with the reviewing the proposals. Several sites have been listed as possibilities for a solar array including city hall on Game Farm Road, but no decisions have been made on where one will go.
