On November 23, 2021, Illinois legislative leaders were notified by the Office of the Illinois Comptroller that the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) is nearly a month delinquent on providing financial reporting for the Comptroller’s comprehensive annual financial report.

State Senator Sue Rezin said she was angry that the state agency is not being held to the same standards as Illinois private businesses.

“This continued lack of accountability from the administration on unemployment financials is completely unacceptable,” said Rezin, “While our employers are struggling to recover from a national economic crisis and there is mounting concern that unemployment insurance taxes will be raised to compensate for the loss and mismanagement, the agency is unwilling to even provide a basic financial report. It is tremendously unfair to penalize Illinois businesses for fraud perpetrated by criminals and ineptness from the administration in dealing with the fraud.”

As of late September, IDES acknowledged they lost approximately $14.8 million in unaccounted-for money, for unknown reasons.
