Walk 4 Charity – Community Service – 4-H Federation

4-H Teen Federation Event Raises more than $1,500 for Local Food Pantries.

Even amidst a pandemic, the Kendall County 4-H Teen Federation wanted to continue its annual philanthropic fundraiser. With a few tweaks to the plan, they inspired dozens of 4-H members from eight clubs, and together, they raised $1,547 for local food pantries this spring.

The 4-H teen leaders shifted from past “Bowl-A-Thon” and “Skate-4-Charity” events to a “Walk-4-Charity” fundraiser that allowed participants to rack up miles with their own families or with 4-H clubs to raise money.

“The goal was to support our local food pantries to help combat food insecurity in our county,” says Kim Eisnaugle, Kendall County 4-H program coordinator. “It also encouraged our 4-H families and clubs to get outside and exercise too. The 4-H teen leaders and club members really came through, collecting the largest amount in the last three years!”

The annual fundraiser is largest community service project led by the Kendall County 4-H Federation. In addition to planning the event, seven Federation teens walked and raised funds. The 42 participating 4-H members represented eight clubs: Barn and Beyond, The Dream Catchers, Lisbon Town and Country Millbrook Mighty Ones, Minooka 4-H +1H, Renegades Rebels and Rogues, Seward Kids and Critters, and Stagecoach Trailblazers.

Stagecoach Trailblazers had seven youth participate and collected $550. The Vickery family alone collected $360, earning the backpack prize to take on their next family hike.

During the pandemic, the 4-H Teen Federation also recorded themselves reading books to share with teachers and classrooms, and they created and sent cards to hospitalized youth and seniors in nursing home care.
