Edward Francis O’Connell Jr., age 84 of Sugar Grove, IL passed away on Friday, April 2, 2021 at Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, IL. He was born on May 31, 1936 in Aurora, IL the son of Edward F. and Jessie (Brackett) O’Connell.
Ed was united in marriage on May 5, 1956 to Janice Florence and they spent the next 64 years happily together. He was employed, for many years, with Caterpillar Inc in Montgomery, IL. After retirement he became a self-employed carpenter. Mr. O’Connell was a member of St. Katherine of Drexel Catholic Church in Sugar Grove, IL. Ed was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle who will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.
Ed’s love of family times included game playing, boating, family vacations. Ed enjoyed mentoring his son and grandsons in the building trades and life. Ed also passed his love for travel and his hard working ethic to his kids and grandkids. He was a man of God, a hero, a treasured friend, a ready helper in any time of need, a handyman, a counselor, an anchor in the storms of life, a man who loved his family and Jesus. He was a man of great faith and the power of prayer. His faith is a gift to all of us.
Ed is survived by his wife, Janice O’Connell of Sugar Grove, IL; his children, Edward (Debra) O’Connell of Brussels, WI, Debbie (Tim) Torres of North Aurora, IL, Colleen (Steve) Paulsen of Steward, IL, Sherry (Joe) Hernandez of Nokomis, FL and Michele (Clint) Phillips of Ashland, MO; his grandchildren, Scott Paulsen, Eric Paulsen, Erin Watson, Emily O’Connell, Steven Torres, Mark Torres, Jamie Guzick, Laura Guzick, Riley Phillips, Kyle Phillips and Blake Phillips; his great-grandchildren, Hunter and Lily Watson, Vinnie Fulco, Peyton and Raelynn Paulsen; also several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Eugene and Hugh O’Connell; and his sisters, Mary Kay Voss and Julia Touvell.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at St. Katherine Drexel Catholic Church, 8S055 Dugan Road, Sugar Grove, IL with Father Bob Jones, officiating. Interment will follow in the Kaneville Cemetery in Kaneville, IL.
Friends may visit from 4:00 until 7:00 PM on Tuesday, April 6, 2021 at the Nelson Funeral Home, 1617 North Bridge Street, Yorkville, IL.
