The Newark Norsemen boys basketball team won their quarterfinal game against Hinckley-Big Rock at Hinckley on Wednesday night 49-43. The game was close throughout with Newark hitting some clutch free throws down the stretch to get the win.
HBR was up 11-10 after a back and forth first quarter with Riley Hogan coming off the bench for the home town Royals scoring 7 of their 11 points. Jaren Slivka had 10 points for Newark in the second quarter to give the Norsemen a 26-23 lead at the half.
The third quarter was also very tight as the two teams battled throughout. Newark was outscored by two points 11-9 to see their lead slip to just one point at 35-34 going to the fourth quarter. Several clutch free throws by Slivka, Teagan Kruser and Grandon Mitchell helped Newark secure the win.
Slivka was the leading scorer in the game with 20 points and Mitchell had 10 for Newark as well. HBR was led in scoring by Bedal with 14 points and Hogan added 11. Newark will now play Somonauk in a semi-final at Somonauk on Friday night.
