The Yorkville Foxes football team improved to 3-0, 2-0 with a game winning field goal from Matt Maldonado from 22 yards out. Maldonado hit 3 field goals in the game from 40, 37 and the winning 22 yard kick on the night. A tough loss for the Oswego East Wolves and a thrilling win for the Foxes.
Yorkville led by 3-0 at the half after a hard hitting defensive minded first half of football. Head Coach Dan McGuire said on the Saturday Morning Sports Show that Maldonado had worked very hard in the long off season. He does the place kicking and punting for the Foxes and his success has come from hours of preparation.
The Foxes added to their slim lead early in the 3rd quarter as quarterback Luke Davies hit John Swarn for 57 yards and a touchdown with Maldonado adding the point after. The Foxes would extend the lead to 13-0 on the 37 yard FG late in the 3rd quarter. The Wolves scored quickly after that on a 68 yard touchdown run by Darquel Sanders.
The Wolves would take the lead in the fourth quarter on a short 2 yard touchdown run by Oshobi Odior. Oswego East quarterback Michael Ford who was 16-25 thru the air in the game setup the 2 yard TD with a pass of third down at 14 to Odior in the 4th. Some wild events happened after that to set the stage for the winning field goal.
Oswego East hurt themselves as they were call for over 100 yards in penalties during the contest including a big one late. Davies completed a 60 yard pass to speedster Kory Flowers and a penalty on the play by the Wolves added on 9 more yards. Daejeion Lewis rushed for 109 on 29 carries for the Foxes and he rushed a couple of times setting up the 22 yard kick that Maldonado nailed as time expired.
The Wolves fell to 1-2, 0-2 on the season. Sanders in the loss had a great night rushing with a game high 117 yards. We will carry Oswego East vs Oswego on Friday night, April 9th at 7:00pm. The game will be played at West Aurora.
